College Success - SLS1101

This course is designed to teach you how to have a successful college experience both academically and personally. The focus will be on the development of practical knowledge and skills to assist you toward that goal.

Topics include time management, test taking, communication skills, study techniques, critical thinking skills, campus resources and managing the personal and relationship issues that face many college students.

This course is a three-credit elective.

National data supports that the College Success class significantly improves student academic performance and persistence to achieve academic goals.

Organize your Time
  • Begin reviewing early.
  • Conduct short daily review sessions.
  • Read text assignments before lectures.
  • Review notes immediately after lectures.
  • Review with a group.
  • Break up the study tasks into manageable chunks.
  • Study the most difficult material when you are alert.
Avoiding Procrastination

The only way to avoid procrastination is to do the project at hand. To do the project at hand, you have to be motivated.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Why am I doing this?
  • What if I don't do this?
  • What will happen if I do this later?
Basic Skills for College Survival
  • Sit near the front.
  • Get to know your instructors.
  • Get to know some students in the class.
  • Attend class faithfully.
  • Always use a sharpened pencil and a good eraser (in math).
  • Do work neatly in a notebook.
  • Do homework as soon as possible after class.
  • Get help from effective sources.
