Successful Strategies for Teaching Adult Students with Learning Disabilities

  • Presenters: Dr. Kim Spence-Cochran and Jason Klazon, UCF Center for Autism and Related Disabilities
  • Description: This presentation will provide an overview of instructional strategies for college professors working with students with a variety of disabilities. Participants will be provided with real-world examples, practical suggestions, intervention strategies and general information for managing behavior and difficult classroom situations when dealing with students with learning disabilities.

Copyright Issues for Faculty

  • Presenter: Patrick Whitehead, Esq., Palm Beach Atlantic University
  • Description: The workshop will review basic and the more advanced aspects of the U.S. copyright laws applicable to faculty members in educational institutions. A short primer on intellectual property law will be provided, illustrating the differences between copyright, trademark, patent and trade secret. The session will include discussions of the issues facing faculty members as creators/owners of copyright, such as literary and artistic works and course syllabi, as well as use of copyrighted works of others in a classroom setting and in distance education. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

Information on how faculty and staff members can apply to be a chaperon for the 2009 trips to China, Japan, Mexico and Salzburg will be provided. This seminar is sponsored by the International Studies Program and the Faculty Institute.

International Book Club Discussion: Bliss by O.Z. Livaneli

  • Date: Thursday, September 25, 2008

  • Presenter: Dr. Hakan Ozoglu, Asst. Professor of History, University of Central Florida
  • Description: Bliss is a fictional novel that contrasts traditional and modern culture in Turkey and draws attention to human rights violations against women in the Middle East. Livaneli, a prominent author and composer who serves in the Turkish Parliament, describes the intertwining journeys of three Turks: a young girl, raped and exiled from her home; her cousin, traumatized from war; and a Harvard-educated professor disenchanted with his life in Istanbul.

Practical Applications of Myers-Briggs in the Classroom

  • Presenters: Jenny Middleton and Debbie Warfield, SCC social science professors
  • Description: Why do some students just sit there while others won't shut up? Why do some students want to know "how" while others want to know "what if?"  Why do some students learn best by constantly challenging you while others learn best by being supported by you? Why are deadlines sacred to some students while, for others, deadlines are there to be stretched? Get the answers to these and other questions in this presentation on how having knowledge of Myers-Briggs personality types can help you in your classroom. Participants should take the online version of the Myers-Briggs test and know their personality type before attending the workshop.
