Financial Aid FAQs

If I plan to start classes in August (Term I/Fall Semester), when should I start filling out my paperwork?

The free application for Federal Student Aid can be completed after January 1 or mail online (www.fafsa.ed.gov) for the next academic year. If you have applied in previous years, you may receive a renewal application.

What is SCC`s Title IV Code Number and address?

The six digit code number is 001520 and address is 100 Weldon Blvd, Sanford, FL 32773

How will I know how much financial aid I will receive?

As soon as your Student Aid Report is received electronically an estimated award letter will be mailed.

How is the financial aid need determined?

By taking your cost of attendance (COA), and subtracting your expected family contribution (EFC).

What happens to my financial aid if I have to withdraw from my classes?

Withdrawing from any of your classes can affect your financial aid standards of satisfactory progress, therefore, check with one of the financial aid advisors prior to withdrawing. (Also please see section on Return of Title IV Funds.)

What if I do not qualify for Federal PELL Grant?

Other financial aid options for SCC students include scholarships, shot-term loans, federal loans, work study, and a limited number of fee waivers.

What is the difference between grants, loans, scholarships, and work-study?

Scholarships and grants are free monies that don`t have to be paid back. Loans must be repaid. Work-study lets you work and earn money while in school.

How do I pay for my books?

Some awards pay for any education-related expenses and some may be used as a book voucher at the book store (such as PELL if your award is enough.) Check with the Financial Aid Office if you have questions.

If I receive a PELL Grant and I use part of it for tuition and part of it for books, what happens to the rest of the money?

A check for the remainder is mailed to you approximately 10 days after classes begin.

If I apply for a guaranteed student loan, how soon will I receive my check?

There are certain guidelines before we release the checks.

For first-time borrowers, there is a mandatory 30-day wait, others, the check will be mailed.

Do I have to be a full-time student in order to receive financial aid?

Each type of assistance has different requirements. For example: PELL Grant recipients do not have to be full-time; however, the enrollment status changes the amount of the grant. Loan recipients must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 college credits or 6 vocational hours. Certain scholarships require full-time attendance. Exceptions may be made for documented disabilities for programs such as the Florida Student Assistance Grant (FSAG).

What is FSEOG?

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant is for undergraduate students with the greatest financial need enrolled half-time. It does not have to be paid back

What happens if I skip a semester and receive a PELL Grant?

You might not receive the entire PELL award amount if you decide to skip a semester. Any monies not earned during Terms I and II may be used during the following summer. The money is awarded within the current school year and is not carried over to the following school year.

How often do I have to apply for federal aid?

You must apply every academic year. Apply as soon as possible after January 1 using your previous year`s federal income tax return.

For example, if you are filing the 200041-2004 FAFSA, use your 2000 tax return(s).

Once I receive the SAR, what do I do with it?

You should review the information and make any necessary correction. If verification is required, bring copies of your tax return, your parents` tax return (if you apply as a dependent student), and your spouse`s tax return (if you are married and your spouse filed a separate return). You will be notified if additional documents are required.

How soon should I have my file completed if I plan to start in August?

The earlier the required documents are submitted to the financial aid office, the sooner your award will be processed. Priority consideration will be given to those students who complete their files by April 1.

How can I obtain a duplicate copy of my Student Aid Report?
