SCC launches job mentoring initiative

SCC's Career Development Center (CDC) is teaming up with the SCC Foundation to provide mentoring and job shadowing for students.

CDC Director Christy King introduced the program at the President's Club Breakfast held April 3 at the Heathrow Country Club.

King asked the group of business and community leaders to support the program, which offers resume and interview advice, job counseling, internships and job-shadowing opportunities to SCC students.

The program is flexible, she said. Employers can limit the number of requests they receive or the number of hours they are willing to give. They also can specify how the students may contact them, such as only by e-mail or by making an appointment.

There are more than 3,000 students registered in CDC's database, which was launched in September 2006 as a resume-posting and job-search tool.

"The President's Club is an excellent resource for our students," she said.

This is one of the first initiatives of the Foundation's President's Club Advisory Council, an action committee for College donors that was launched in December.

Ben Newman, vice-chair of the council, said he was surprised to learn about all the services the CDC provides to students. "Our goal is to create meaningful ways for President's Club members to interact with SCC and its students, faculty and staff," Newman said.
