The Medical Information Coder/Biller: Health Information Management program is a college credit certificate program consisting of 34-35 college credit hours and is approved as a Comprehensive Coding Program by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Upon program completion, students have the technical skills necessary to begin working in healthcare as an entry-level medical coder and medical biller. Medical coding and billing skills are taught manually and enhanced with coding and billing software applications. The knowledge gained from the Medical Information Coder/Biller: Health Information Management Program prepares students to become nationally certified. The major courses are available evening/online. Students must have access to a computer with Internet capabilities while enrolled in the program. (Access to computers is available at SCC campuses, see regulations on computer access at http://www.scc-fl.edu/policies-procedures/administration/policies/1.140.htm). The prerequisite courses are: HSC1531, HSC1453 or BSC 2093C, HIM1000, HSC1149, CGS2100C and HIM1430. Minimum test scores are required prior to registering for the following courses: HSC1531, HIM1453, and HIM1000. BSC 1010C is a prerequisite for BSC 2093C. All students are required to have a criminal background check prior to internship placement.

Candidates must:

  • Apply and be accepted to Seminole Community College;
  • In order to begin major courses, students must be eligible for English I (ENC1101) as indicated by scores on the CPT, ACT, or SAT.

HIM1222CBasic Medical Coding
This course is designed to introduce the student to medical nomenclature and classification systems. Emphasis will be placed on ICD-9-CM structure, conventions, and guidelines for coding in hospitals and physicians? offices.

HIM2211CComputer Applications and Technologies in Healthcare
This course provides an overview of healthcare information systems with a concentration on computerized health information management (HIM) functions. Students will be introduced to common software applications utilized to perform HIM processes. Emerging technology issues in healthcare will be explored. Lab fee required.

HIM2253CIntermediate Coding
Students will develop skills in the use of the Physician's Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and HCPCS coding system in ambulatory healthcare settings.

HIM2273Physician Office Billing and Reimbursement
This course serves as an introduction to healthcare reimbursement methodologies, claims processing (CMS-1500), insurance carrier requirements, and applicable state and federal regulations. It acquaints students with the billing procedures used in physician offices. Strong emphasis will be placed on regulatory compliance and auditing. The students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a laboratory setting utilizing practice management/billing software. Lab fee required.

HIM2283CAdvanced Medical Records Coder
Advanced coding concepts related to hospital DRGs, case mix, and ASCs will be introduced. Regulatory changes and updates affecting coding and reimbursement will be discussed, including ICD-10. Quality and productivity will also be explained. The 3M Encoder and Reference software will be used to provide hands-on practice to assign ICD-9-CM and CPT codes to diagnoses and procedures from actual hospital ED, ambulatory surgery, and inpatient medical records. Lab fee required.

HIM2800Medical Coding and Billing Internship
This course is a capstone experience wherein the student will apply the medical coding and billing skills acquired through academic instruction.

CGS2100COffice Applications
This course focuses on the concepts and operation of the main components of word processor, electronic spreadsheet, database management, and presentation software programs. Students will gain fundamental knowledge of a major software suite and learn skills that have practical application in real world situations. Lab fee required.

HSC1531Medical Terminology
This course is an introductory course to the language of medicine utilized by healthcare professionals. Basic word structure and formation, medical terms, abbreviations, definitions and spelling are included. Major disease processes and pathological conditions of specific body systems will be discussed.

HIM1000Introduction to Health Information Management
Students will learn the history, purpose, content, as well as professional ethics and legal principles of the medical record and health information. Health Information Management Department functions, workflow, and quality considerations will be discussed. Students will compare the paper medical record to the electronic health record. Furthermore, course content includes an introduction to SHHS, CMS, HIPPAA, JCAHO, The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information, and professional organizations affiliated with health information, medical coding, and medical documentation integrity.

HIM1430Concepts of Disease
This course provides an overview of all body system diseases and conditions including etiology, signs and symptoms, diagnostic and treatment modalities.

HSC1149Basic Pharmacotherapy
This course will provide the student the opportunity to explore basic concepts regarding the most common therapeutic medication prescribed to treat the most common human disease conditions. The five rights of drug administration and causes of medication errors will also be identified in order to enhance medical record review.

A study of the principles and language of pharmacology and laboratory medicine, including drugs and drug classes, diagnostic tests, indications, techniques, expression of values, and significance of findings.

HIM1453Anatomy and Physiology
This course is a presentation of the essential anatomy and physiology of the human body. All body organ systems are discussed in a format of lecture, diagrams, and audio-visual material. The course will introduce some aspects of chemistry and microbiology as they relate to healthcare, although emphasis is not placed in these areas. A knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the human body as a basis for later study of disease process is an essential part of the curriculum for students in the health professions.

BSC2093CAnatomy and Physiology I
An integrated two-semester laboratory-oriented study of human anatomy and physiological function. Emphasis is placed on presenting accurate and significant information on the body systems and their interrelationships to structure and physiology. Recommended for students planning to pursue programs in nursing, allied health sciences, and physical education. Lab fee required.
