Center for Public Safety

Construction will begin this summer on SCC's Center for Public Safety, which will bring the Criminal Justice, Fire Science and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Programs together in one prominent location on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus.

The new Center will provide high-tech classroom space and allow for expansion of SCC's public service programs. Existing space in the K and I buildings is being completely renovated, and a new administrative wing will be built to connect the buildings.

Jim Hague, director of the Center for Public Safety, said the expansion will benefit students, who will now have one location for information about classes and programs. It will also allow more cross-training among faculty, he said.

About 1,600 students annually attend classes in SCC's public safety programs, Hague said.

Another part of the expansion is already under way. Construction on a new $3 million fire simulation tower should be completed this summer. The tower, which will allow live firefighter training on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus, is the only one of its kind and will have a simulation room and other props for training firefighters.

Construction Timeline:

  • June 12, 2008: A construction fence will encircle I and K buildings on the west side of SCC's Sanford/Lake Mary Campus, on Thursday, June 12. This development will restrict parking around the two structures, affecting more than 300 parking spaces on campus. By Monday, June 16, the fence will be fully installed, and the lot will be closed to faculty, staff and students.
  • June 2008: K Building demolition begins; the building will be evacuated with restricted parking and walking access.
  • July 2008: The new Fire Simulation Tower will be complete.
  • Fall 2008: Renovation of the K and I Buildings begins.
  • Fall 2008 through Spring 2009: The CTS Storage Building will be demolished; water lines will be replaced outside of the J and V Buildings; temporary firetruck storage on the tennis courts and ambulance storage outside of the B Building begins.
  • Fall 2009: Work begins on the addition of a connector building between the K and I Buildings.
  • Spring 2010: Estimated completion
